Overview

Benin has low-grade iron ore deposits at Loumbou-Loumbou and a possible gold deposit in the north of the country. There are sedimentary phosphate deposits in the Mekrou River area of northern Benin. Other mineral resources include chromium, diamonds, iron ore, limestone, which is used for cement making, and rutile. The country exports a small quantity of industrial diamonds.
