Overview
Uranium deposits are hosted by a variety of geological environments in Zambia. Uranium oxide production in Zambia has been limited to only 120 000 kg of U3O8 which was produced from the Mkana Mine between 1957 to 1959. Since then exploration has been carried by numerous companies focusing on potential mineralisation in Karoo Age sediments, the Copperbelt and the Domes region of the Northwest Province.
Uranium mineralisation has been identified as vein and disseminated mineralisation located in the footwall rocks of the Lower and Upper Roan Sequences of the Copperbelt and Domes region in northwest Zambia. The younger Karoo age sediments in southern Zambia also have potential, evidenced by drilling and resource estimations by companies such as Agip and Cogema. Currently, Australian junior Haddington International Resources have a licence over the Siavonga Region that hosts several small deposits identified by Agip. The estimated resource for this area is 6 400 t of U3O8that includes the Njame, Mutanga and Bungua deposits.
