Description
Sao Tome lies approximately 180 miles from the coast of Gabon and is crossed by the equator at it’s southern tip. Principe is 160 miles from the coast of Equatorial Guinea. Sao Tome has a land area of 330 square miles and Principe has a land area of 42 square miles. The islands are volcanic in origin and rise to a height of 6,639 feet above sea level. The Island has the potential to be one of Africa’s largest oil producers. São Tomé and Príncipe is in the centre of the Gulf of Guinea, where several major oil discoveries have been made over the last 10 years.

In June 2005 five offshore oil blocks in the joint development zone between Nigeria and São Tomé and Príncipe were finally awarded with the main winner emerging as US based Environmental Remedial Holding Corporation (ERHC). In Block 2, a consortium of ERHC, Devon and Pioneer consortium was awarded a 65 percent interest and was designated the block’s operator. Also in Block 4, a consortium of ERHC and Noble was awarded 60 percent interest and operatorship of the acreage.

Anadarko won a 51 percent share and the operatorship of Block 3, Pioneer also won a 25% interest in the block. Block 6 went to a small-scale Nigerian oil company, Filtim Huzod which is partnering with China’s Sinopec.

A 75% interest in Block 5 was awarded to a consortium of International Commerce and Communications (ICC) and Oil Exploration Consortium (OEC).

IN April 2004 ChevronTexaco was awarded the right to conduct exploration activities in deepwater Block-1 in the Joint Development Zone (JDZ). ChevronTexaco is the perator with a 51 percent interest in the block, located approximately 190 miles (300 kilometers) north of the city of Sao Tome in 5,700 feet (1,750 meters) of water. ExxonMobil was been awarded a 40 percent interest. In February 2005 Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria-Sao Tome “One” Limited, signed a Production Sharing Contract (PSC) with the JDA and consortium co-venturers ChevronTexaco and Dangote Energy Equity Resources, to explore for commercial hydrocarbons in Block 1 of the offshore Joint Development Zone (JDZ).
