Background Information
Chilanga’s core business is cement clinker and cement. Chilanga Cement was founded in 1949 by the Government of Northern Rhodesia and the Colonial (now Commonwealth) Development Corporation (CDC). During the early 1950’s the company’s shareholder base was broadened to include Anglo-American and Premier Portland Cement. In 1957 the company was fully privatised, but it was re-nationalised in 1973 when the Government acquired a majority shareholding. In 1994, Chilanga became the first large state-owned company to be privatised when Commonwealth Development Corporation increased its shareholding to 50% and assumed management control. The residual Government shares were sold in May 1995 to Zambians in the country’s first initial public offering and Chilanga became the first company to become listed on the Lusaka Stock Exchange in 1995.

The company has plants at Chilanga (near Lusaka) and in Ndola.

Chilanga’s largest customer is ZCCM. It exports into neighbouring countries such as Malawi, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.
