Bauxite Mining – Australia

Through subsidiary Comalco, Rio Tinto has a 67% interest in the Weipa bauxite mine in northen Queensland. Comalco also has interests in the Boyne Island aluminium smlter and the Gladstone refinery, both in Queensland.

Bauxite Mining – Guinea

Through its interest in Halco, Rio Tinto’s Comalco have a minority interest (4%) in the Boke bauxite mine in Guinea.

Coal Mining – Australia

Through Australian subsidiaries Pacific Coal and Coal and Allied Industries, Rio Tinto operates several operations in Queensland and New South Wales.

Coal Mining – Brazil

Rio Tinto has a 40% interest in Copelmi, a local company that produces domestic coal from the Recreio mine located in the State of Rio Grande do Sul..

Coal Mining – Indonesia

Rio Tinto owns 50% (the remainder with BP Coal) of Kaltim Prima in Indonesia, a major coal producer with operations in East Kalimantan.

Rio Tinto produce iron ore from the 80% owned Corumba mine in the state of Mato grosso do Sul.

Nickel and Cobalt Mining – Brazil

Rio Tinto Brasil own and operate the Fortaleza nickel mine, mill and smelter in Brazil.

Nickel and Cobalt Mining – Zimbabwe

Rio Tinto operates the Empress nickel refinery in Zimbabwe on a toll basis.

Uranium Mining – Namibia

Rio Tinto have a 69% interest in the Rossing uranium mine in Namibia.

Zinc and Lead Mining – Spain

Riomin, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto has an interest in the Las Cruces high-grade copper deposit in Spain. It is currently completing feasibility studies. Rio Tinto also operate the Atlantic copper smelter in Spain.

Zinc and Lead Mining – Sweden

Rio Tinto owns and operates the Zinkgruvan zinc – copper mine in Sweden.
